Therapeutic Equestrian Program for Children and Adults
New Heights Therapeutic riding is a progressive equestrian program helping people with physical, learning and emotional disabilities achieve an improved quality of life. Based on input from doctors, therapists, instructors and parents, the riders’ individual goals are designed to complement ongoing therapy and education.
Riding sessions for the riders are a unique form of therapy. The riding instructor is sensitive to the needs of each individual and is knowledgeable about their disability. Therefore, the content and goals vary depending upon the type and extent of the disability. Everyone is encouraged to be the best he or she can be, on and off the horse.
Benefits of therapeutic horseback riding include:
Physical–The three-dimensional motion of the horse provides the rider hip and back action that simulates natural walking. Riding relaxes and strengthens muscles and improves body tone, posture, balance, joint mobility and coordination.
Learning–Contact with horses and horsemanship training provides a noncompetitive setting for learning. Activities done in the lessons increase concentration, memory and communications.
Emotional–Horseback riding nurtures a positive self-image. Riders may, for the first time in their lives, experience some independence and a sense of being part of a team.
Therapeutic horseback riding has a different effect for each person. To a person who uses a wheelchair, it offers unique experiences possible only while riding a horse, such as free access and mobility. It provides a new sensory experience—looking down at other people instead of always looking up.
You Can Make a Difference
Only a small portion of the cost of the program is charged to riders and their families, subject to their ability to pay. The remainder is raised through special events and corporate and individual gifts. You can help by:
• Being a sponsor: New Heights Golf Classic in the spring or The Garden Party at Summergrove Farms in the fall.
• Providing a scholarship
• Designating your United Way Pledge
• Sponsoring a horse
• Volunteering
